From an old-time collection of fine British and Commonwealth coins, Lincoln Gold & Coin is pleased to offer this fully original 1791 Proof One Cent issued under the reign of King George III for the British Colony of Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone Company was founded to manage a settlement on the western shores of Africa which would be a refuge for Africans avoiding or escaping slavery. The contract for minting coinage for the new colony was given to Matthew Bolton of the Soho Mint Birmingham. The date of 1791 reflects the founding of the colony. This proof cent with a mintage of only 400 pieces was issued in April of 1793. This choice chocolate brown highly reflective proof was purchased over 40 years ago from the venerable firm of Spink & Son -  London and is now being offered with other fine world coins. This is a beautiful coin and a wonderful opportunity for the advanced collector of British or Commonwealth coins. As always, our experienced staff is available to answer any questions prior to purchase. We utilize eBay's global shipping program for all of our international sales.  This coin will be sent insured.
