You would have been hard pressed in the late '50s to find a more luxurious vehicle than the Lincoln Continental, and few were larger. In fact, 1958-60 Lincolns were the largest unit-body cars constructed at the time, a fantastic 227.1 inches long and in the case of the four-door Hardtop Sedan, weighing 6,845 pounds. At the very top of the Lincoln passenger car line, the four-door Mark IV Hardtop Sedan came with a full suite of amazing features. Six-Way power seats, dual-speaker Travel Tuner radio, and power steering and brakes were standard. Of course the windows went down as well—all five of them, with the glass back window retracting and even both front vent windows powering out. Air conditioning and Autronic Eye automatic headlamp dimmer are additionally equipped. Speaking of power, it took a lot of it to move three-and-a-half tons of luxury sedan. A 430 CI V-8 was relaxed and understressed in this application. More important than the horsepower, 490-lbs.ft. of torque was available at 2,800 RPM, which amazingly, moved the huge car to 60 MPH in 8.7 seconds. To handle the power while still giving smooth acceleration, the Mark IV used Lincoln’s Twin-Range Turbo-Drive automatic, an interesting and effective setup that gave high and low gear ranges with a torque converter and three-speed planetary gear set. This Continental offers all of the personality for which these great Lincolns are famed.
