    BIRKENSTOCK is a German success story.  The historical roots of this family run company goes back at least to 1774: Johann Adam Birkenstock was listed in the church archives of Langenbergheim. a city in Hesse, as a "subject and cobbler." Around 120 years later (1896) Konrad Birkenstock opened two shoe shops in Frankfurt am Main and began producing footbeds. In 1963, BIRKENSTOCK launched the "Madrid" model: its first pair of sandals.  They were a global success.  In 1982, the first five models of the toe grip sandal followed.  Over the years, the product range continued to grow.  Today it contains around 800 items. BIRKENSTOCK has been a global player for over 40 years.  It produces most of its products in Germany and sells them in over 80 countries.
