Description
Nov. 1941 Four Telegrams to Grant Mills Golden Theatre for the Opening of the Play "Little Dark Horse." Grant Mills was a Broadway Actor in New York in the early part of the century. The people who sent these Telegrams were friends in the Acting and Theatre community. Unfortunately the play "Little Dark Horse" was a flop. It only played 9 times, and closed 6 days after it opened. We assume that these telegrams are in good condition, but to be quite honest, we have ever received a telegram. It does have some wavering in the paper, but the corners and edges seem quite strong. And it is as clean, and just what one would expect a telegram to be. Please see all of the photos above to confirm the contents and condition.Item 485351-8 ◊ Nov. 1941 Four Telegrams to Grant Mills Golden Theatre for the Opening of the Play "Little Dark Horse
Rare and historical
"Nov. 1941 Four Telegrams to Grant Mills Golden Theatre for the Opening of the Play "Little Dark Horse."
The four Telegrams were different sizes, depending on the wording, but they all measure approximately 8" x 6" (≈20.3 cm x 15 cm.)
Grant Mills
was a Broadway Actor in New York in the early part of the century. We know from research on the Internet that he performed in a popular play back in 1929, called "Once in a Lifetime," playing the part of as Jerry Hyland. And w
e know that later in 1934-35 he was a supporting member of the cast for "Merrily We Roll Along," and had many parts after that.
The people who sent these Telegrams were friends in the Acting and Theatre community. They were all sent to the Golden Theater on West 45th St. in New York City, for the play which opened in November, 13, 1941. Unfortunately we do know that the play "Little Dark Horse" was a flop. It only played 9 times, and closed 6 days after it opened.
Shortly after that Grant Mills married Elizabeth Swett, whose family owned and operated the Lakewood summer resort and theater in the town of Madison near Skowhegen,
Maine. The Swett family owned and operated the property from 1926 until 1971. During that time it was a Who's Who of famous personalities from silent screen, broadway, movie and television. People such as Alan London, Milton Berle, Phyllis Diller, Carol Channing, Lana Turner, John Travolta, Gloria Swanson, William Shatner, Lloyd Bridges, Patty Duke, Humphrey Bogart, and Groucho Marx, to name a few. Grant Mills still remained active as an actor participating in theater productions throughout his life until his death in 1973.
In this day of almost instant communication via cell phones, it's hard to imagine that someone would need to use a telegram to communicate with a friend.
We assume that these telegrams are in good condition. We were both born in the early 50s and to be quite honest neither of us have ever received a telegram. It does have some wavering in the paper, but the corners and edges seem quite strong. And it is as clean, and just what one would expect a telegram to be. (Please see all the photos above to confirm the condition of all of the telegrams.)
Unique and interesting "
