This is a rare August 19th, 1940 program (playbill) from a revival of the EUGENE O'NEILL play "THE EMPEROR JONES" at the Maplewood Theatre in Maplewood, New Jersey. (The Original Broadway production opened November 1st, 1920 at New York's Provincetown Playhouse, transferred twice to the Selwyn and Princess Theatres and ran for a combined 204 performances.) ..... The play starred PAUL ROBESON as "Brutus Jones", the role he played in the 1925 Broadway revival and the 1933 motion picture and featured RALPH CULLINAN, ANNE WILSON, ADD BATES, FRANK WILSON, OWEN BIRKETT, FRANK FIELD, IVAN LEWIS, ALEXANDER McDONALD, HOWARD TAYLOR, PHILANDER THOMAS and CLARENCE WASHINGTON ..... DETAILS: The eight page playbill measures 7" X 9 1/4" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is soiling to the front cover, a clipped corner to the back cover and a vertical fold. Despite these flaws, this rare playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
